5 killed in Israeli strikes on south Lebanon despite ceasefire

Fresh Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon have cast a shadow over ongoing efforts to secure a lasting peace agreement between the United States and Iran. The attacks came despite a recently announced ceasefire and ahead of high-level talks in Switzerland aimed at turning a temporary truce into a long-term settlement.

US envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are expected to hold discussions focused on extending the current agreement, which includes a halt in military operations, sanctions relief measures and steps to stabilise the region. However, renewed violence along the Israel-Lebanon border has raised concerns over the future of the negotiations.

According to reports, Israeli strikes were launched following the killing of Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon, resulting in multiple casualties and renewed tensions with Hezbollah. The escalation briefly disrupted diplomatic momentum and prompted concerns from international mediators involved in the peace process.
