Speaking at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), United States President Donald Trump reaffirmed his stance on brokering peace between India and Pakistan during the May 2025 confrontation, asserting that Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directly expressed gratitude to him for “saving 30 million lives.”
Highlighting his administration’s diplomatic record before international delegates, Trump grouped the South Asian de-escalation alongside several other international disputes he claims to have successfully mediated.
Commending the Pakistani leader on the world stage, Trump praised Shehbaz Sharif as a “terrific man” and stated that the Prime Minister explicitly credited American foreign policy intervention with averting a massive humanitarian catastrophe.
Trump’s address revives a recurring theme from his public remarks over the past year, pointing back to the intense cross-border military crisis that drew global attention to the subcontinent in mid-2025.
