Team India’s Olympic outfits become talk of virtual world

The official outfits for Team India at the Paris Olympics 2024 were unveiled last week, sparking considerable buzz. Designed by the renowned Indian fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani in collaboration with Tasva, these outfits sought to blend traditional Indian attire with a contemporary twist.

However, the results were met with mixed reactions. Social media was ablaze with opinions following the opening ceremony late Saturday, as critics and supporters alike shared their thoughts on the distinctive attire.

The men of Team India donned elegant kurta bundi sets, while the women graced the event in matching saris, all meticulously designed in the vibrant colours of the Indian flag. The ensembles featured ikat-inspired prints and luxurious Banarasi brocade, intended to infuse a touch of elegance and sophistication. Tahiliani, a name synonymous with high fashion, said his goal was to honour India’s rich cultural heritage while simultaneously appealing to an international audience at the Olympics.

Despite his good intentions, the outfits did not receive universal praise. Many netizens felt that the designs fell short of truly capturing the essence of Indian culture.
