AMRITSAR: A man accused of firing at Assistant Sub-Inspector Jaswant Singh was killed in an encounter with Amritsar Rural Police on Saturday, while two policemen were injured, according to reports.
India Today identified the accused as Karanvir Singh and said he had escaped from custody after an earlier arrest. Police intercepted him in the Jhandher area, where he allegedly opened fire and was hit in retaliatory firing.
One policeman sustained a bullet injury to the thigh, while another was protected by a bulletproof jacket, India Today reported. The accused later died from his injuries.
The Tribune reported that the 19-year-old accused, also identified as Karanbir Singh alias Nandi, was wanted in connection with the shooting of ASI Jaswant Singh and was intercepted in Kandowal village under Jhander police station.
Police said the earlier attack on the ASI occurred in Ajnala this month. Further details of the encounter and the condition of the injured personnel were awaited.
