New Delhi, June 5. Senior journalist and author Gurcharan Singh Babbar , president of the All India Sikh Conference (Babbar), has submitted a detailed memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a timely and independent judicial inquiry by sitting Supreme Court judges into Operation Blue Star , which took place in 1984. The Prime Minister’s Office has confirmed receipt of the memorandum.
The memorandum states that the military action taken at Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) and Sri Akal Takht Sahib in June 1984, during the tenure of the then Prime Minister, the late Mrs. Indira Gandhi, deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikh community. The organization states that the pain, anger, and emotional trauma caused by this incident have not fully subsided, and the issue remains a topic of constant discussion among the Sikh community worldwide.
The memorandum also states that the operation was carried out when a large number of devotees were present at Sri Harmandir Sahib on the occasion of the martyrdom of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. The organization claims that, according to various accounts and theories, a large number of innocent people were killed in this operation. It also calls for an impartial investigation into the allegations of military action and loss of life at several prominent Gurdwaras in Punjab.
The All India Sikh Conference (BABBA) stated in its memorandum that the political decisions and policies taken at that time should also be investigated. The organization believes that if the objective was solely to arrest Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his associates, other peaceful options could have been pursued. The memorandum also noted that allegations have been made for years that preparations for military action were made in advance. All such allegations and claims should be investigated impartially and credibly to uncover the truth.
The memorandum states that tanks, artillery, and other military resources were used during the operation, resulting in extensive damage to Sri Harmandir Sahib, Sri Akal Takht Sahib, and other religious structures. The organization states that these events continue to cause deep grief and resentment among many Sikhs around the world.
Gurcharan Singh Babbar urged the Prime Minister to order an investigation into the entire matter under the supervision of sitting Supreme Court judges, so that the full truth surrounding Operation Blue Star can be revealed to the nation and the world. He said that truth, transparency, and justice are the most effective means to heal historical wounds and strengthen national unity.
The organization has expressed hope that the Central Government will seriously consider this demand and take necessary steps in accordance with the democratic values and judicial traditions of the country.
