New ISBT Planned at Bhalswa Landfill Site in Delhi

New Delhi: In a significant step aimed at strengthening public transport infrastructure in the national capital, the Delhi government has decided to develop a new Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) at the Bhalswa landfill site in North Delhi. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting of the Transport Department where officials reviewed long-term plans to improve connectivity and reduce congestion at existing bus terminals.

According to officials, the proposed ISBT will be developed after the scientific reclamation and redevelopment of the Bhalswa landfill area. The project is expected to play a crucial role in handling the increasing number of interstate buses entering and leaving Delhi every day.

Currently, major interstate bus operations in the capital are handled through terminals such as the Maharana Pratap Inter State Bus Terminal (Kashmere Gate ISBT), Anand Vihar ISBT, and Sarai Kale Khan ISBT, all of which often face heavy passenger load and traffic congestion.

Officials from the Delhi Transport Department said that developing a new ISBT in North Delhi will significantly reduce pressure on the existing bus terminals and improve interstate transport connectivity with neighbouring states such as Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

The Bhalswa Landfill, one of the largest garbage dump sites in the capital, has been under consideration for redevelopment after efforts to reduce the massive waste mound and reclaim the land. Authorities believe that transforming the reclaimed land into a modern transport hub will be an important step toward urban redevelopment and better infrastructure planning.

The proposed ISBT is expected to include modern passenger facilities, parking areas for buses, waiting halls, ticket counters, food courts, and better traffic management systems to ensure smooth movement of buses and passengers.

Officials indicated that detailed project planning, feasibility studies, and environmental clearances will be undertaken before the construction work begins.

Urban planners believe that the new bus terminal will not only improve transportation facilities but will also contribute to the redevelopment of surrounding areas in North Delhi.

The proposal is part of the broader strategy of the Delhi government to modernize the capital’s transport infrastructure and improve public mobility in the rapidly expanding metropolitan region.
