Maligaon, 13th March, 2026: The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today dedicated and laid foundation stone for various railway infrastructure development projects in Kokrajhar, Assam via Video Conferencing from Guwahati.
The Prime Minister flagged off the Kamakhya-Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express, the Guwahati-New Jalpaiguri Express and the Narangi-Agartala Express further boosting the railway connectivity in the Northeast. The Prime Minister said that these new trains and projects will be stimulating trade & tourism and beneficial for students & patients. He also stated that improved communication & logistics will provide easier access to larger markets benefiting regional economy. The Prime Minister also congratulated the people of Assam on the launch of various other transformative developmental works.
The Prime Minister also laid foundation stone for a new railway Wagon POH Workshop at Bashbari, Kokrajhar, worth Rs 256 Cr., which will strengthen railway rolling stock maintenance infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and generate employment opportunities in the region. The Prime Minister also stated that significant strides are being taken to bolster overall development of railways and local economy. He also stated that the upcoming rail link to Bhutan and the on-going modernization of the station will turn the area into a logistics hub. He mentioned that the stopovers of Vande Bharat and Rajdhani Express trains in Kokrajhar, symbolizes the region’s rising status. Kokrajhar is set to become a major centre of trade through these new initiatives.
Later on at Guwahati, the Prime Minister dedicated to the nation three major railway electrification projects. These include electrification of railway lines between Rangiya-Mukongselek (558 km), Chaparmukh-Dibrugarh (571 km) and Badarpur-Silchar & Badarpur-Churaibari (315 km). Foundation stone of Furkating-Tinsukia double line (194 km) was also laid by the Prime Minister. The total cost of these projects is Rs 5,890 Cr.
These initiatives will significantly enhance railway infrastructure in Northeast including Assam while promoting economic growth, tourism and regional integration across the region, contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat through stronger connectivity.
