New Delhi, March 11: In a significant political and administrative development for the National Capital, Taranjit Singh Sandhu today formally assumed office as the 23rd Lieutenant Governor of Delhi after taking the oath at the historic Raj Niwas. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, in a solemn ceremony attended by senior political leaders, government officials and distinguished guests.
The event marked the beginning of a new chapter in Delhi’s governance as Sandhu, a seasoned diplomat and former Indian Ambassador to the United States, stepped into one of the most important constitutional positions in the country’s capital.
The ceremony was attended by Rekha Gupta, Chief Minister of Delhi, along with cabinet ministers, senior bureaucrats, members of Parliament and representatives from various diplomatic missions.
Following the oath, Sandhu expressed his commitment to work for the development of Delhi and emphasized that the capital must transform challenges into opportunities through efficient governance and cooperation among all institutions. Before entering Raj Niwas, Taranjit Singh Sandhu built a distinguished career in diplomacy spanning more than three decades. A 1988-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, Sandhu held several key diplomatic assignments representing India across the world.

Ambassador of India to the United States (2020–2024)
High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka (2017–2020)
Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Washington
Senior postings at India’s missions to the United Nations and in Europe
During his tenure in Washington, Sandhu played a crucial role in strengthening the strategic partnership between India and the United States, particularly in areas such as defence cooperation, trade relations and technology collaboration.
His appointment to Delhi’s top constitutional office is widely seen as recognition of his administrative experience and international stature.
The swearing-in of Sandhu also carries historical significance. He has become only the second Sikh to serve as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, after Air Chief Marshal Arjan Singh who held the position in 1989. His appointment has therefore been welcomed by many observers as an important moment of representation and leadership within the national capital’s governance structure.
Sandhu succeeds Vinai Kumar Saxena, who served as Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor since May 2022. Saxena has now been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh as part of a wider administrative reshuffle of governors and constitutional heads across several states and union territories.
The office of Lieutenant Governor serves as the constitutional head of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, representing the President of India and overseeing important administrative matters of the Union Territory.
In his first remarks after assuming office, Sandhu emphasized that Delhi, as the capital of the world’s largest democracy, carries a special responsibility. 
He underlined that cooperation between the central government, the Delhi government and civic agencies will be essential to address key challenges such as urban infrastructure, pollution control, transportation, housing and public services.

.The majestic Raj Niwas in Civil Lines, also known historically as Ludlow Castle, has been the official residence of Delhi’s Lieutenant Governors for decades.
Beyond being a residence, it serves as the centre of constitutional administration in Delhi where major official meetings, policy discussions and ceremonial functions take place. From Independence Day receptions to diplomatic engagements, Raj Niwas remains one of the most prominent government establishments in the capital.
With the swearing-in of Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Delhi begins a new phase of constitutional leadership. Political observers believe his international exposure, diplomatic skill and administrative experience may bring a fresh perspective to the governance of India’s capital city.
