Nearly nine months after the shocking death of Greater Noida resident Nikki Bhati, both families have reportedly reached a settlement in the dowry death case through panchayat mediation.
The agreement includes transfer of property in the names of Nikki Bhati’s children, financial assistance for the family and the return of Nikki’s sister Kanchan Bhati to her marital home.
According to reports, the settlement was reached after prolonged discussions between Nikki and Kanchan’s parents and the Bhati family. The dispute had continued for months while police investigated the case and arrested Nikki’s husband Vipin Bhati, his parents and elder brother.
The property transfer decision was reportedly taken to secure the future and legal rights of Nikki’s children. Following the agreement, Nikki’s family is expected to move court seeking withdrawal of the case through an affidavit.
Nikki Bhati died in August last year after allegedly being assaulted and set on fire by her husband and in-laws following repeated dowry demands. Her sister Kanchan, who was married to Vipin’s brother Rohit, had also alleged physical assault and harassment.
